Garlitsky is a Russian violinist, composer, arranger, singer, and teacher born (in
Moscow) on September 8, 1982.<span> </span>In
addition to being a classical violinist, he is well-known for playing jazz
violin in various jazz combos.<span> </span>He is
frequently seen playing with Duved Dunayevsky, jazz guitarist based in Paris,
France, who hearkens back to the days and style of Django Reinhardt.<span> </span>Some have said that Garlitsky specializes in
old style jazz, referencing the days of Eddie South, Stephane Grapelli, and Joe
Venutti, though that is a much too narrow description of his artist profile.<span> </span>He does, however, dress in the style of the
times of the old jazz players when he performs jazz concerts, saying that
modern suits make him look “like a security agent.”<span> </span>He says the fashion helps project the charm
of the old era of jazz so it’s like part of the show, providing a suitable
backdrop for the music itself.<span> </span>Garlitsky’s
playing has been described as “exciting, elegant, subtle, and majestic,
displaying incredible precision, character, and a pure sound."<span> </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJxEOPvTT0E" target="_blank">Here</a> is a video of a well-known jazz song –
Minor Swing – featuring Garlitsky’s improvisational skills.<span> </span>Violin players reading this will note that
his bow hold and his bowing style is very similar to that of Heifetz.<span> </span>Garlitsky began his violin studies at age 6
with his father (Boris Garlitsky, a respected violinist in Russia who served as
concertmaster of the London Philharmonic for a time) using the violin method book
written by his (Daniel’s) grandfather, Mikhail Garlitsky, a violin study method
book widely used in Russia which is based on the study of scales and arpeggios,
something that Heifetz and Paganini highly valued.<span> </span>He was soon thereafter enrolled at the
Gnessin school for gifted children in Moscow, where he also studied piano.<span> </span>At age 9 (1991), he moved to France with his
family, where he began studies at the Lyon Conservatory.<span> </span>In 1999, he became a student at the National
Conservatory for Music and Dance, graduating three years later.<span> </span>He then immediately began concertizing around
Europe and sat in as concertmaster with various orchestras as well. <span> </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=logC96I_rEk" target="_blank">Here</a> is a video from early in his career when
he served as leader of a famous European chamber ensemble. <span> </span>Garlitsky was also seriously interested in
harmonic theory and composition and, in addition, studied early music
performance practices.<span> </span>While doing all
this, he encountered the field of jazz and swing music in Paris.<span> </span>Later, he was invited to teach at the Paris
Conservatory, but I don’t know whether he still teaches there.<span> </span>One source says that his career actually took
a 180 degree turn and so he now devotes almost all his time to jazz gigs,
composing, and arranging.<span> He is the composer of several movie soundtracks and has arranged songs for pop stars. His itinerary has taken him on tour to the U.S., Europe, and Asia. </span>He plays a
modern violin made for him by Jacques Fustier in 2003 although he also plays a
Joseph Guarnerius (son of Andrea Guarnerius and father of the famous “del Gesu”
Joseph Guarnerius) from an unknown year of construction.<span> </span>Among Garlitsky’s teachers are Igor
Volochine, Rainer Kussmaul, Matis Vaitsner, Pierre Aimard, and Glenn
Dicterow.<span> </span></span></span><br /></div><div><p></p></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6627409443932495817.post-52645438942467621222023-07-30T07:38:00.005-07:002023-07-30T11:36:37.594-07:00Alexis Cardenas<p style="text-align: justify;"> <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Venezuelan violinist, teacher, arranger, and composer born (in Maracaibo,
Venezuela) on March 24, 1976.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(Maracaibo
is in northwest Venezuela, about 300 miles west of Caracas, the capital of
Venezuela.)<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He is one of Venezuela’s
leading violinists and is well known for doing a lot of crossover work with one
group known as Recoveco.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcKNN3CiE2Y" target="_blank">Here</a> is an
audio file of a studio recording which is typical of their style.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Cardenas is a leading exponent of Venezuelan
folk music, although his formal training is entirely in (and from) the classical
realm.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His arrangements of traditional Latin
American folk music incorporate classical music, often including direct quotes,
especially of Bach violin sonatas.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>For
the past 25 years, his home base has been Paris, France, where he is
co-concertmaster of the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France (National Orchestra
of the Isle of France or National Orchestra of the Region of France, an area
which is made up of eight districts immediately surrounding Paris.)<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The orchestra was established in 1974 and
serves a population of approximately twelve million people.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Its main venue is the Philharmonie de
Paris.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeDqnrXe-oU&list=PLzNGb0lkQaobCy27vChjDPeFvfJJXvOdR&index=5" target="_blank">Here</a> is a YouTube video of the
orchestra performing a theatrical piece for narrator and orchestra, Ondin and
the Little Mermaid (Ondin et la Petit Sirène.)<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSPbD_BocsE&list=PLzNGb0lkQaobCy27vChjDPeFvfJJXvOdR&index=8" target="_blank">Here</a> is another featuring a rather unique presentation of two
Tchaikovsky works.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Another unique
performance - this time of a Scarlatti Sonata - is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM3Ld-vHn5U" target="_blank">here</a> – it is reminiscent of
what Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto sometimes does in some of his
performances.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Cardenas began his violin
studies at age 9 in Maracaibo.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Among his
first teachers was Jose Baldaen.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He made
his public debut at age 12 (one source says age 11) with the Maracaibo
Symphony, playing the Mendelssohn concerto (the one in e minor.)<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A year later (1989), he soloed with the
Tchaikovsky concerto, but I don’t know with what orchestra.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He began his studies at the Juilliard school
in New York in 1990.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(One source says he
left for New York in 1992.)<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His teacher
there was Margaret Pardee – many young violinists from Venezuela studied with
Pardee.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Three years later, at age 15, Cardenas
returned to Venezuela and was appointed concertmaster of the National
Philharmonic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He was also a guest
soloist with every major orchestra in Venezuela during this time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>At age 17 (1995) he left Venezuela for Paris where
he enrolled at the National Conservatory for Music and Dance.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His teacher there was Olivier Charlier but he
also studied with Jean Kantorow and Roland Dugareuil later on.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He entered his first violin competition
(Tibor Varga in Switzerland) in 1997.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He
has concertized in Europe, Russia, Canada, and South America, working with
well-known conductors, including Pavel Kogan, Alondra de la Parra, Pablo
Ziegler, and Gustavo Dudamel.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I do not
know if he has ever toured the U.S.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He
has won silver and bronze medals in various violin competitions, including the
Paganini violin competition in Genoa in 2002 and Montreal violin competition in
2003.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His best-known studio recording is
“Stories Without Words” which is easily found on the internet.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Cardenas is currently composing a violin
concerto which will incorporate non-traditional instruments (mostly from
Caribbean countries and South America) in a symphonic score.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It should be completed within the next
year.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He has stated that his motivation
is his enormous curiosity.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I do not know
what violin he plays.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div><p></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6627409443932495817.post-7816792110082245272022-11-30T09:26:00.006-08:002023-10-28T08:54:53.043-07:00Daniel Kurganov<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh411a9-vvzIFRxbO0mZ0z7nNnLjXGcSAApt3wDxcdwfnheZ0apcVU35N2xFljwtoWSdklo6KCcgVh2jrCWqY9vX9h4HDmZA0R_-sasycwch6EGuemjYb-4cIm-5-UZboz0wEF-9-NJwAFiQ4yrAU8LEzzE3tbvvt0uPpWIVzaM-4pdE6kc1D4HhYNkwQ/s245/D%20Kurganov.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="197" data-original-width="245" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh411a9-vvzIFRxbO0mZ0z7nNnLjXGcSAApt3wDxcdwfnheZ0apcVU35N2xFljwtoWSdklo6KCcgVh2jrCWqY9vX9h4HDmZA0R_-sasycwch6EGuemjYb-4cIm-5-UZboz0wEF-9-NJwAFiQ4yrAU8LEzzE3tbvvt0uPpWIVzaM-4pdE6kc1D4HhYNkwQ/s1600/D%20Kurganov.jpg" width="245" /></a></div><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml>

Alexandrovich Kurganov) is an American violinist, violist, pedagogue, musicologist,
producer, and entrepreneur, born (in Minsk, Belarus, in the former USSR) on
November 29, 1986. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(Minsk is a city
located about 100 miles southeast of Vilnius, Lithuania – the birthplace of
Jascha Heifetz – and 450 miles southwest of Moscow.) <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He is well known for (almost certainly) being
the only concert violinist in history to have begun his violin studies after
the age of 12. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He is also very well
known for (indisputably) having the most comprehensive violin tutorial YouTube
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/@DanielKurganov" target="_blank">Channel</a>, which addresses
every conceivable issue having to do with technique and interpretation –
bowing, shifting, legato, vibrato, articulation, scales, phrasing, intonation,
etc.. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Kurganov has over 47,000
subscribers on YouTube and his channel is still growing. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>On other social media, he has a strong
presence as well. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As if that weren’t
enough, he delves into related subjects which are fascinating for professionals
and non-professionals alike<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></b>One of his popular videos features him
playing the da Vinci Stradivarius violin previously owned by Toscha Seidel,
which was recently sold for more than 15 million dollars. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In fact, Kurganov began his YouTube channel
posting (from his collection) old 78 RPM recordings by <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCCKSmHMnEk" target="_blank">Seidel</a>.
His teaching and recording projects have been highlighted in <a href="https://www.thestrad.com/reviews/daniel-kurganov-rhythm-and-the-borrowed-past/14935.article" target="_blank">The Strad</a>, the most respected classical music
periodical in the world. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He maintains a private
teaching studio in the Boston (USA) area but also teaches virtually via Zoom. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He can spend anywhere between 10 seconds (!!!)
and more than an hour assessing a prospective student. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His family had moved from Minsk to the Chicago
area when he was still a child and he further relocated from Chicago to Boston
in 2011. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Besides being a violinist (and
violist), he has something else in common with Nicolo Paganini – he began his
instrumental studies with piano and guitar. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Kurganov switched to violin at age 16. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>His first teacher was Alla Danichkina in
Chicago. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Up to that point, Danichkina
had been Kurganov’s piano teacher but she happened to also be a violinist so
the transition was uninterrupted. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Having
overcome prodigious obstacles, he made his professional violin debut not in a
concert hall but in a Russian restaurant in the Chicago area, playing violin duos
with his violin teacher in 2003 at the age of 17 – many concert artists are
half way through their solo careers by that age. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This brings us to another special coincidence:
Josef Gingold, Albert Sammons, Alfredo Campoli, Joseph Roisman, Manuel Quiroga, Jacques Thibaud, Theodore Thomas,
Vasa Prihoda, Geza Legocky, and Louis Krasner also played in hotels,
restaurants, and nightclubs prior to establishing their classical careers.
(That is a little-known fact.) <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Among his
other teachers is Rudolf Koelman (in Switzerland), protégé of Jascha Heifetz. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Although Kurganov is widely respected for his
achievements and artistry, he has also faced professional bias due to his late
start. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>(The world of classical violin is
extremely competitive but a quick look at one of his videos – or his CDs - will
quickly dissuade anyone from that biased point of view.) <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Quite interestingly, it was only his
colleagues who tried to persuade him to give up (since he was starting so
late); his teachers never advised him to drop out. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Kurganov has concertized in the U.S, Europe, and
the Far East. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He also plays duo recitals
with pianist Constantine <a href="https://www.naxos.com/Bio/Person/Constantine_Finehouse/302581" target="_blank">Finehouse</a>
as well as in a piano trio. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Although he
will spontaneously alter a phrase in the midst of a live performance, in the
tradition of Szigeti and Heifetz, <a href="http://www.kurganov.org/" target="_blank">Kurganov</a>
is a rigorous and meticulous violinist. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In
that regard, he might be considered to be the opposite of violinists like Ivry
Gitlis, Gilles Apap, and Sergei Stadler, whose approach is rather impetuous,
giving the impression that their performances could become unhinged at any
moment. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Kurganov’s repertoire includes
many technically demanding contemporary works but he has said that contemporary
composers need to not “make the violin seem overqualified for the job.” <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Reviews of his performances speak for
themselves. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Outside of the violin and
pedagogic world, Kurganov’s other interests include chess (which almost 100% of
concert violinists play) and photography - as a photographer, he is still
entertaining the idea of having a solo exhibition. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Kurganov has also designed a shoulder rest
which may soon reach the market. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As we
all know, history has a way of repeating itself - after one unique concert in
Switzerland, Kurganov was paid in gold (after playing for nobility, Mozart used
to be paid with jewels or snuff boxes, Elias Breeskin received a valuable ring,
and Bronislaw Huberman received a violin as payment.) <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Kurganov has played and had access to
priceless violins throughout his career (violins by old masters like Stradivari
and Guarneri) but his current violin is a modern violin by Andrew <a href="https://andrewryanviolins.godaddysites.com/" target="_blank">Ryan</a>. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>He has stated that three artists with whom he
would like to spend time conversing are J.S. Bach, Glenn Gould, and Daniil
Shafran (an interesting choice.) </span><br /></p><p> </p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6627409443932495817.post-38748620125165125792021-09-04T21:52:00.001-07:002021-09-04T22:25:52.674-07:00Linus Roth<p style="text-align: justify;"><span face="Calibri, sans-serif" style="font-size: 14pt;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KjbK1PQNObg/YTQ_dn8kB6I/AAAAAAAAF8g/XaTqpztTyeQMp_T0aN61FOpwFal8wvvQACLcBGAsYHQ/s331/Roth.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="331" data-original-width="221" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KjbK1PQNObg/YTQ_dn8kB6I/AAAAAAAAF8g/XaTqpztTyeQMp_T0aN61FOpwFal8wvvQACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Roth.JPG" width="214" /></a></div><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Linus

(in Granada) on December 4, 2002. She is very likely the best Spanish violinist
since Pablo Sarasate (1844-1908.) She is also known as a former child prodigy.
She has been winning violin competitions since she was 14 years old, including
the Zhuhai (China), the Vladimir Spivakov (Russia), the G.P Telemann (Poland),
the Yankelevitch (Russia), the Leonid Kogan (Belgium), and the Luigi Zanuccoli
(Italy) violin competitions. * (see comments below) Since she is also a composer, she writes her own
cadenzas for each concerto she plays. As a member of the Hamamelis Quartet, she
also won first prize at the Fidelio Chamber Music Competition in Vienna in 2017.
She began her violin studies at age 5 in Spain. I do not know who her first
teacher was. At age 7, she entered the Granada Conservatory. She made her local
debut with the Granada Symphony at age 11, playing the first concerto of Mozart.
Andrea Marcon was on the podium. When she was 12 years old, her family moved to
Vienna so that she could study with Boris Kuschnir (well-known violin pedagogue)
at the University for Music and Art in Graz and at the Music and Arts University
in Vienna, Austria. (Graz is about a two-hour drive from Vienna, driving south.)
In this effort, she was assisted by Russian violinist, Vladimir Spivakov.
(Spivakov’s Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra has a very strong connection to
Spain.) In September of 2019, she was named Artist of the Month by Musical
America being only 16 years old. <a href="https://www.mariaduenasviolin.com/en" target="_blank">Dueñas</a> has already concertized in many
countries around the world (including the U.S.) and has played in some of the
most prestigious concert halls but, since she is still a student at the
University, understandably spends most of her time in Europe. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHSD8QbtWtQ" target="_blank">Here</a> is one of her
many YouTube video performances. You can judge her virtuosity and style for
yourself. Dueñas speaks four languages fluently – German, English, French, and
Spanish. She is also currently studying the Russian language. Two of her violins
have been a Nicolo Gagliano (1764), on loan from the German Musical Life
Foundation and the Muntz Guarneri (1736) on loan from the Nippon Music
Foundation. I do not know if she is still using either one of those fine
violins. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #fce5cd;">Orlando Barera was an Italian (some would say
American) violinist and conductor born (in Bologna, Italy) on February 6,
1907. Two sources say he was born in
Ferrara, Italy in 1908. (Ferrara is
about 25 miles north of Bologna.) He
began his career as a concert violinist but is best known for being the
conductor of the El Paso (Texas) Symphony from the fall of 1951 to the spring
of 1970. Prior to that he was the
conductor of the Baton Rouge (Louisiana) Symphony for one year and just before
that, he was the concertmaster and Assistant Conductor (for one year also) of
the Houston Symphony. Before those two
posts, he had served as concertmaster of the Kansas City (Missouri) Symphony
and the Havana Symphony (prior to Fidel Castro’s political revolution.) Barera is one of many violinists who turned
from concertizing to conducting – Jaap Van Zweden, Eugene Ormandy, David
Zinman, Alan Gilbert, Neville Marriner, Pierre Monteux, Peter Oundjian, Jacques
Singer, Charles Munch, and Theodore Thomas are among them. He began his studies with his father, who was
a professor at the conservatory of music in Bologna. He graduated at age 15 with diplomas in
violin, composition, and piano. Immediately
thereafter, he added an additional two years of study before embarking on a
solo career. His concertizing began in
Italy but then later included France, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Russia,
and the Netherlands. His first
appearance in the U.S. took place at Town Hall in New York on February 10, 1936. He was 29 years old. He later played at the Library of Congress in
Washington D.C. that same year but returned to play in Europe in the latter part of that year. On November 11, 1936, he played Lalo’s
Symphonie Espagnol with the Prague Radio Symphony. Karl Ancerl was on the podium. I do not know if the performance was
recorded. Upon his return to the U.S., he gave a second recital at Town Hall on December 27, 1936. He played
Mozart’s fourth concerto with the Boston Symphony on February 21, 1937. Serge Koussevitzky conducted. On December 3, 1938, he was guest artist with
the New York Philharmonic. This time, he
played the Mendelssohn concerto, the one in e minor. John Barbirolli conducted. When war broke out, he enlisted in the U.S.
Army and served a tour of duty until the war’s end. His career - which he took up again when he
was appointed concertmaster in Kansas City – was thus interrupted. An interesting detail in his career is that between
July 11 and November 10, 1950, he participated (as assistant principal second
violinist) in 14 recording sessions which Leopold Stokowski conducted in New
York. At many of these recording
sessions, Victor Aitay, the soon-to-be concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony,
was Barera’s stand partner – Aitay was, at that time, a section violinist in
the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Being
the well-known figure he was on the east coast and beyond, Barera was able to
introduce many world class string players to El Paso audiences. Among them were Ruggiero Ricci, Zvi Zeitlin,
Isaac Stern, Berl Senofsky, Zino Francescatti, Pierre Fournier, Mischa Elman,
Michael Rabin, Zara Nelsova, Arturo Delmoni, Salvatore Accardo, and Tossy
Spivakovsky. Of his association with
Barera, Michael Rabin once said “Barera is very good and a hell of a nice
guy. Believe me, I wish every conductor
would be as easy to work with as he is.
He takes away all the tightness and strain and just lets me enjoy
myself.” Barera owned and played a
Gagliano violin from a year and specific maker unknown to me – the Gagliano
violin-making family produced several good makers. Barera died on March 26, 1971, at age
64. </span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #fce5cd;">Ilya Gringolts is a Russian violinist,
teacher, conductor, and composer born (in Leningrad) on July 2, 1982. He is known for being immersed in
period-instrument performance as well as contemporary playing styles. Ever since he won the 1998 Paganini
Competition at age 16, his virtuosity has become well-known. (The following year, Sayaka Shoji won the
competition – she also was 16 years old.)
As is customary with almost all contemporary violinists, Gringolts
participates in many music festivals around the world. (The production of music festivals seems to
have exploded after 1950 and festivals of one kind or another can now be found
in every corner of the planet.) Gringolts
began studying the violin at age five. I
do not know who his first teacher was. At
age 8, he began studying violin and composition in the St Petersburg (formerly
known as Leningrad) Special Music School with Tatiana Liberova and Jeanna
Metallidi, two teachers of whom I had never heard. In 1994, he made his debut with the Moscow
Symphony Orchestra. He was 12 years
old. I don’t know which piece he played
at that concert. In 1995, he made his
European orchestral debut in Finland, playing Bruch’s first concerto. After winning the Paganini competition, he
relocated to New York (in 1999) and studied at Juilliard with Dorothy Delay and Itzhak Perlman
for three years. During the latter part
of those same three years, he was spending a lot of time in London, studying
and giving concerts. Gringolts made his
Canadian debut (in Ottawa) in 1999 (one source says 2002) – Pinchas Zukerman
was on the podium. He was 17 years
old. He has been very busy ever since,
playing all over the world with every important conductor and in every prestigious
venue. In 2013, he recorded the 24
Paganini Caprices. A usually-reliable
source states that Gringolts now teaches at the Advanced School for the Arts (aka
Zurich Academy of the Arts) in Zurich, Switzerland. Another source says he teaches (or has
taught) at the Basel Hochschule. When I
checked, neither school would confirm his position as violin professor. Regarding his teaching, he has stated –
contrary to universally-accepted dogma - that being a motivator is not part of
his job. In his own words: “I think that
everyone is his or her own motivator.
You should know why you do something, otherwise you shouldn’t do
it.” In 2008, he founded the Gringolts
Quartet. He maintains a busy schedule
with the quartet. It also allows him to
spend more time with his wife, who is the quartet’s second violinist. His discography is not extensive by any
measure but the recordings he has under his belt have been highly praised and
have received awards. Among those
recordings are the Arensky and the Taneyev concertos, two works which are very
(very) seldom heard. You might want to
obtain his recording of the first Paganini concerto since it is pretty
outstanding – it was released in March of 1999.
It is not yet available on YouTube.
A current project in progress is his recording of all of Igor
Stravinsky’s works for violin. Among the
violins he has played are the Kiesewetter Stradivarius (1723), the Provigny
Stradivarius (1716), and a Guarneri Del Gesu dated 1742. </span></span><span style="background-color: #444444; color: #fce5cd; font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.6667px;"> </span><span style="background-color: #444444; color: #fce5cd; font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 14.6667px;"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_BId5xAEoc" target="_blank">Here</a></span><span style="background-color: #444444; color: #fce5cd; font-family: "calibri" , sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;"> is one of Gringolts’ YouTube videos – a

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #fce5cd; font-family: "calibri" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Rodney Friend is an English violinist,
teacher, and author born (in Bradford, England) in 1939. He is best known for being the concertmaster
of three of the world’s best orchestras – the New York Philharmonic, the London
Philharmonic, and the BBC Symphony. He
began his violin studies at age seven. I do not know who his first teacher was. At 12, he received a scholarship to
study at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
His main teacher was Frederick Grinke, a Canadian violinist who played
for Churchill, Truman, and Stalin at the famous Potsdam Conference in the
summer of 1945. Friend later studied
with Endre Wolf, Yehudi Menuhin, and Henryk Szeryng. One usually-reliable source says he also
later studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music. In September, 1964, Friend became the concertmaster of
the London Philharmonic. He was 24 years
old. He played the Britten concerto in
his first solo appearance with this orchestra.
However, by then, he had made his London debut playing the Sibelius
concerto with the Halle Orchestra (in 1961) at the Festival Hall with John Barbirolli on the podium. Friend played with the London Philharmonic for 12 years. In 1975, he was invited to be the New York
Philharmonic’s concertmaster. He was 35
years old. He had already made his
American debut with this orchestra playing the Britten concerto. He probably began his tenure as concertmaster
in New York in the fall of 1976. On
March 10, 1977, in his new role as concertmaster, he soloed with the orchestra,
this time playing Karol Szymanowski’s first concerto. Erich Leinsdorf was on the podium. In 1981, Friend returned to England and became
the concertmaster of the BBC Symphony. In
that year also, he became professor of violin at the Royal College of
Music. He was 42 years old. Since 1990, he has devoted his time to
teaching, writing, judging international competitions, and playing and/or
directing chamber music concerts. He
formed the Solomon Trio in 1991. In
2006, Friend’s two-volume work entitled The Orchestral Violinist (a study guide
for orchestral players) appeared. It has
been acclaimed by many critics. In 2010,
he founded the Cambridge International String Academy at Trinity College. In 2015, he joined the Royal Academy of Music
faculty. In 2019, his pedagogic work
entitled The Violin in Fifths was published.
Many sources say it is a unique study guide. It is easily found on the internet. Among other violins, Friend has played (and
might still be playing) a Giuseppe (Battista) Guarneri violin dated 1696 (not a
Del Gesu.) (According to a usually-reliable source, for a time, he also played a Guarneri Del Gesu dated 1731.) Needless to say, he has
recorded (as an orchestral violinist) practically the entire orchestral repertoire. He has also appeared in every important
concert hall in the world and worked alongside the most eminent conductors and
soloists of the twentieth century. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=oas7AYTck34" target="_blank">Here</a>
is a very charming YouTube audio file of one of his commercial recordings as
soloist. </span></div>

born (in Jerusalem) in 1979. He is well-known

as a violin student at age 5. He began
to play and study the viola at age 11. Most
of his studies took place in Israel and in Germany. In 1995, he founded the Jerusalem Quartet
with three other student-colleagues from the Jerusalem Music Center. He was 16 years old. The quartet (which comprised the majority of
his professional activity between 1995 and 2009) subsequently won several
distinguished awards and prizes from various organizations. As a viola soloist, Grosz has also won top
prizes in several competitions. In 2010,
Grosz was appointed Principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic. Although orchestral players are for the most
part anonymous to the general public, principal players enjoy slightly higher
profiles. Grosz continues to perform as

Russian violinist and teacher born (in Moscow) on September 6, 1932. He is known for his impressive recording of
Wieniawski’s first violin concerto in F sharp minor, but he is also known for
having spent a large part of his career in Spain. For some time, he was concertmaster of
Vladimir Spivakov’s Moscow Virtuosi, which was founded in 1979. I do not know if he was the initial
concertmaster – he probably was. The
Moscow Virtuosi later resided in Spain for nine years (1990-1999.) When the Moscow Virtuosi left Spain, Futer
stayed behind. He then became
concertmaster of the Oviedo Symphony Orchestra.
He was 67 years old. (Oviedo is
the small capital city of the principality of Asturias, located in northern Spain,
next to the Bay of Biscay.) Prior to his
association with the Moscow Virtuosi, Futer was concertmaster of the Moscow Philharmonic,
the Moscow Radio Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Film Industry of the
USSR. He was also a member of at least
two string quartets. Futer began his
studies at age 7 in Kiev, in the years of 1939 or 1940, I don’t know which. His first teacher was Nina Dulova. In 1943, he returned to Moscow with his
family. He was 11 years old. He entered the Tchaikovsky Conservatory at
age 18. Yuri Yankelevitch was one of his
teachers. He later graduated from the
conservatory with top honors. He was
named Artist of the Russian Republic in 1998.

England – Stockport is about five miles southeast of Manchester) on November 9,
1989. She is known for having been the
youngest winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award competition in
2002. On the occasion of her
performance, she played the well-known Mendelssohn concerto - the one in e

touring the world as soloist in recital and with orchestra, as most concert
artists do. Her violin studies began at
age 5. I do not know who her first
teacher was, although it is very likely that it was her father, a violinist and
composer. At age 8 she entered Chetham’s
School of Music in Manchester. She made
her debut at age 15 playing Haydn’s fourth violin concerto (the one in G),
although by then she had already been recognized as a child prodigy and made
public appearances, including one at the Royal Opera House when she was ten
years old. She further studied with
David Takeno in London. She also
attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and the University
of Oxford (in Oxford, England – about 40 miles northwest of London) from which
she graduated in 2012. Her discography
is not extensive but she has recorded a few works for the Chandos and Sony

<span style="background-color: #444444; color: #fce5cd; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Anna Tifu is a Romanian (some would say Italian) violinist born (in
Cagliari, Italy) on January 1, 1986. (Cagliari
is the capital of Sardinia, a large island off the western coast of
Italy.) She is known for having studied
and spent most of her career in Italy.
She was widely recognized as a child prodigy from the age of eight. Her first teacher was her father at age
6. She made such fast progress that by
age 8 she had won the Vittorio Veneto competition with a first prize. (Vittorio Veneto is a small city in northern
Italy, situated 60 miles north of Venice, not far from the southern Austrian
border.) At age 11 Tifu made her first
solo appearance with orchestra. At age 12,
she played the Bruch g minor concerto at the famous La Scala opera house in
Milan. She graduated from the Cagliari
Music Conservatory at age 15. Tifu
studied further with Salvatore Accardo in Italy and with Aaron Rosand (2005 to
2008) in the U.S. Later still, she
studied in Paris also. Along the way,
she won violin competitions in Italy and Romania. It is possible that Tifu stopped taking
lessons when she turned 24 years old but I am not sure about that, although it
can be said that Tifu has been concertizing since age 11. For some time, her violin was the Berthier
Stradivarius from 1716 but I do not know if she is still playing it. She has also played Paganini’s Cannone 1743
Guarnerius. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SCbCm1LHB0" target="_blank">Here</a> is a YouTube video of

<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #fce5cd;">Wilma Neruda (Wilhelmine Maria Franziska Neruda aka Madame Norman-Neruda
aka Lady Halle) was a Czech (Moravian) violinist and teacher born (in Brno) on
March 21, 1838. (As far as I could
determine, her year of birth is still in question - it could be 1838, 1839, or
even 1840.) She was very famous and
influential in her day but now – even among serious music enthusiasts – is largely
forgotten. However, her name will be
immortal in music history for the fact that she married one of the best known
names in the conducting world, Charles Halle, founder of the Halle
Orchestra. She began violin studies with
her father, Josef Neruda, at age 4. At
age six, Neruda began studying with Leopold Jansa, in Vienna. Jansa was also the teacher of Composer Karl
Goldmark. At age 7, she made her public
debut in Vienna, with her sister at the piano, playing a Bach violin
sonata. In 1848, she made her English
debut in London – she was 10 years old. (One source gives the date as June 11, 1849.) In 1852, she presented a series of concerts in Moscow. It has been said that none other than Henryk Wieniawski considered her one of his main rivals. In 1859, Neruda formed the Neruda Quartet,
comprised of three of her siblings and herself as first violinist. She was 20 years old. She subsequently enjoyed a very busy and
successful career. In 1864, she married
F. W. Ludwig Norman, a well-known Swedish musician, and subsequently presented
herself as Wilma Norman Neruda. The
couple separated after four years and she soon moved to London – she had not
returned to England since 1848. She was
now 30 years old. In 1869, she was named
professor of violin at the Royal Music Academy in Stockholm. Many years later, in 1888, Neruda married
Charles Halle and, after Halle was knighted that same year, became Lady
Halle. She and Halle, who was an
accomplished pianist, had participated in many chamber music concerts together
before their marriage and continued to do so afterward. In 1890, they toured Australia. In 1895, they toured South Africa. Shortly after her husband died in October of
1895, she was gifted a palace in Italy (near Venice) by several members of the
aristocracy. She resided there for a
while. In 1899, four years after Halle
died, she toured the United States and Canada.
Although she retired from concert life at age sixty, she continued to
perform sporadically. In late 1898, she
moved to Berlin to teach, but continued to live part of the year in London. In 1907, she played at the memorial concert
for Joseph Joachim. Neruda played a
Stradivarius violin from 1709 (or 1710), known as the Vieuxtemps Strad. The violin was a gift to her made (by several members of the aristocracy) in 1876. She also
owned several other violins. Neruda died
on April 15, 1911, in Berlin, at age 73. </span></span></div>

born (in Moscow) on May 17, 1989. She is
one of the best known Russian violinists living (and based) in France and has
performed with practically every French orchestra and in every French
venue. When her parents left Russia for
France, she was only 2 years old. As far
as I know, her main teacher has been Boris Kuschnir, with whom she studied (according
to one very reliable source) for almost fourteen years. Soumm also frequently participates in music
festivals, though mostly in Europe. She
began her violin studies with her father (a violinist) at age 5. Her first public appearance took place at age
7 in Ukraine with her mother at the piano.
(Her father is Ukrainian and her mother is Russian.) She entered the Vienna Conservatory, where
she began studying with Kuschnir, at age 10.
Two years later, Soumm made her formal debut in Vienna’s Konzerthaus (in
2002) and has been concertizing ever since.
She won the Eurovision Competition in Lucerne, Switzerland, in 2004, at
age fourteen. According to one source,
she dropped out of high school when she was 16 years old in order to devote
herself to the study of the violin full time and more intensely. In 2011, Soumm began presenting masterclasses
wherever she performed. She made her
U.S. debut in November, 2013, with the Detroit Symphony. She played the Sibelius concerto - Leonard
Slatkin was on the podium. A few days
after that appearance, she made her debut in Chicago, although not with the
Chicago Symphony. She played Mozart’s
third concerto with the Illinois Philharmonic.
David Danzmayr was on the podium.
She was 24 years old. She has
twice appeared at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, before
an audience of about 20,000 people – August 15, 2014, playing the Tchaikovsky
concerto and August 20, 2015 playing the Bernstein Serenade. Playing for huge audiences is something which
violinists of a former generation (including Yehudi Menuhin, Jascha Heifetz,
and Bronislaw Huberman) used to do there (at the Hollywood Bowl) and in New York at Lewisohn Stadium
with the New York Symphony or the New York Philharmonic. Soumm is fluent in the German, French,
English, Spanish, and Russian languages.
Although her discography is not at all extensive, she has performed in
almost every famous venue and with every major orchestra (and conductor) in the
world. Soumm used to play a 1785 (or
1782) G.B. Guadagnini violin but I do not know if she is still playing it. She has also played a Gioffredo Cappa violin
constructed in 1700 (approximately.) Since
2018, Soumm has been associated with the Musica Mundi music school (and
festival) which is based in Belgium. She
has stated that one of the key ingredients for learning to play well is an
insatiable curiosity. A direct (and very
interesting) quote from a recent interview follows: “A lot of people just play
nicely, but that is not the idea because when Beethoven or Tchaikovsky composed
their music, they gave their life to it and so should we.” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPdhCKR1h8Y" target="_blank">Here</a> is a YouTube video of a Bach concerto played by Soumm with the Galicia Symphony Orchestra. </span></span></div>

on September 5, 1976. She is currently
the associate concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She began her career as a soloist but
gravitated toward a high position as an orchestral player, a choice that
possibly provides the best of both worlds since she continues to successfully
concertize as soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist. (Sometimes, orchestral players leave
orchestral work to launch solo careers but that is very rare – only Janos
Starker, Zino Francescatti, Emanuel Vardi, Pablo Casals, William Primrose, Emanuel
Vardi, Berl Senofsky, Lynn Harrell, and Tossy Spivakovsky come to mind. It is far more common for soloists to abandon
the touring life in favor of a more tranquil existence as a first-desk
orchestral player and/or teacher at a top music school.) Kang began violin lessons with James Keene
(concertmaster of the Edmonton Symphony) when she was 4 years old. Three years later, she made her debut in
Montreal. Two years after that, at age 9
(or 10), she entered the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia where her main
teacher was Jascha Brodsky, a well-known violin pedagogue. At Curtis, she also studied chamber music
with Felix Galimir. In 1991 (after
graduating from Curtis), she began studying at the Juilliard School in New York
under Hyo Kang and Dorothy Delay. She
was 15 years old. At 16, Kang made her
New York debut in March, 1993 at the 92nd Street Y. Between 1983 and 1994, Kang won major prizes
at several violin competitions here and abroad, including first prize at the
Yehudi Menuhin violin competition in 1992 and first prize at the Indianapolis
Violin Competition in 1994. She was 18
years old when she won the Indianapolis competition. (Among the top 60 prize winners since the Indianapolis
competition’s inception in 1982, only six or seven players have achieved
high-profile international recognition – Leonidas Kavakos, Simone Lamsma,
Clara-Jumi Kang, Sergei Khachatryan, and Augustin Hadelich.) After many solo appearances, Kang began her
orchestral career in 1999, playing with the Kennedy Center Opera
Orchestra. She was 23 years old. She then played in the first violin section
of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 2001 to 2003 – Raymond Gniewek had
just retired as concertmaster. From 2003
to 2005, Kang was assistant concertmaster with the Boston Symphony. In 2005, at age 29, she was appointed
associate concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Now, she has curtailed her solo appearances
to just three or four concerts per season.
As is customary, she also gets to be a featured soloist with her
orchestra. On her first solo appearance
with the orchestra in 2012, she played Prokofiev’s first concerto. In November of 2014 she played the Stravinsky
concerto and in January, 2018 she played Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy with the
orchestra. Her discography includes her
solo recital at Carnegie Hall and the Wieniawski and Schumann concertos with
the Vancouver Symphony. Kang plays a
Camillo Camilli violin constructed in 1730 (approximately.) I do not know whether she has or has had any
students. </span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: #444444; color: #fff2cc; font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Eda Kersey was an English violinist and teacher born
(in Goodmayes, a district of London) on May 15, 1904. She was a very accomplished musician whose
career was mostly spent in England. She
was also one of quite a few female violinists who died young – Maud Powell, Johanna
Martzy, Ginette Neveu, Edith Volkaert, Alma Rose, Alma Moodie, and Arma Senkrah
are among them. Several sources speak
very highly of her and emphasize that she would have left a great legacy if
only she had lived long enough to record the great works of the violin
repertoire. She is also known to have
stated that practicing seven hours a day (which she routinely did) should be
sufficient for any violinist. Her
musical education began on the piano at age four. She took up the violin at age six when she actually
began studying at the Trinity College of Music in London. Two years later, she was awarded a
certificate from the college with very high marks. She was eight years old. After that, she began studying with Edgar
Mouncher (a pupil of Otakar Sevcik.) After
only two years, at age ten, she played Wieniawski’s second concerto (first
movement only) in Southampton, a city which is 65 miles from London. That concert (in 1915) was a great
success. At age 13, she moved to London
to live with an aunt and uncle in London and began studying with Margaret
Holloway, a pupil of Leopold Auer. Her
first London recital took place three years later at the Aeolian Hall when she
was sixteen years old. (New York City
also had its own Aeolian Hall.) Along
the way, she premiered the concertos of Arnold Bax, Erno Dohnanyi, and Stanley
Wilson, as well as works by other contemporary composers. She also gave the first English performance
of the Barber concerto at a Proms concert in 1943. Her first Proms concert had been in 1930
playing the Beethoven concerto with the famous Henry Wood conducting. She was 26 years old. That performance was the first of several
appearances she made at the popular Proms concerts. In 1931, she formed a piano trio which was
simply named The Trio Players. Her last
concert took place in June, 1944, at the Albert Hall in London. Kersey played a Nicolo Amati, a J.B.
Vuillaume, and a Guarnerius del Gesu (which she acquired from Belgian violinist
Alfred De Reyghere in 1942), among other violins. Eda Kersey died on July 13, 1944, at age 40. Negotiations for many recordings of the
standard repertoire had nearly been concluded before her sudden death but she
never got to actually record anything other than some small pieces (with piano
accompaniment) and the Bax concerto (with orchestral accompaniment) several
months earlier. </span></div>

and teacher born (in Istanbul) on September 22, 1934. She is one of Turkey’s best known concert
violinists. She is also one of the very
few pupils of Zino Francescatti. Erduran
is still active as a recitalist. Although
her career began with a recital at age ten, she was never known as a child
prodigy. That first recital included
Mozart’s fourth concerto and Beethoven’s Spring Sonata. She began violin lessons at age 4 - her first
teacher was her mother (who was a violinist though not a very good one.) Erduran’s early years were difficult because
her mother was not unlike Guila Bustabo’s mother, which is to say, she was
domineering and very pushy. (Guila
Bustabo’s mother was known to beat her on occasion. Bustabo’s fellow pupils many times saw her
with bruises on her little head and arms.)
After a short while, Erduran began lessons with Karl Berger in
Istanbul. Berger was known as the best
violin teacher in Turkey at the time and Erduran studied with him for five years. From age 10 to age 15 or 16, Erduran studied
in Paris with Rene Benedetti, also a very well-known French violin teacher of
that day. (Several biographical
summaries say Erduran studied at the Paris Conservatory but I was not able to
confirm that. Perhaps it’s true.) In 1951, she traveled to the U.S. where she
studied for four years with Ivan Galamian and Zino Francescatti, presumably in
New York and not at the same time. Many
concert violinists concertize while studying but I do not know if Erduran did
that. She left the U.S. in 1955 – she
was either 21 or 22 years old. Before
leaving, she made her American debut in New York but I do not know with which
orchestra she played or when or what she played – all I know is that Thomas
Scherman conducted the program. Her
European debut took place in Warsaw, Poland, where she played the Glazunov
concerto with the Warsaw Philharmonic. In
1957 she went to Moscow to study with David Oistrakh. She stayed until sometime in 1958. She was 24 or 25 years old. In 1957, she was awarded fifth place in the
Wieniawski violin competition – there were more than 120 competitors that year. The next 40 years she spent concertizing
around the world playing with many famous conductors and orchestras in
prestigious concert halls. Erduran
premiered the Elgar concerto in Turkey. Between
1973 and 1990 she taught at the Lausanne Conservatory in Switzerland. She returned to Istanbul in 1990 – she was 56
years old. Erduran has been recognized
for her artistic achievements by several countries, including Turkey, the
Netherlands, England, Poland, and Belgium.
Among the violins she has played are a Guarnerius from 1720 (not a Del
Gesu) and the famous Roederer Stradivarius from 1710, now played (though not
owned) by French violinist David Grimal.
Two biographies have been written about Erduran – they are probably
still in print. Here is a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d37mkdrslB8" target="_blank">YouTube</a> audio
file where Erduran plays a popular Kreisler piece. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #fce5cd;">David Grimal is a French violinist, conductor, and teacher born on
February 9, 1973. He is best known as
the Artistic Director (and Conductor) of the French group Les Dissonances. Ironically, Les Dissonances plays without a
conductor and performs challenging repertoire (such as the Rite of Spring)
which no other conductor-less orchestra would dare. Grimal leads from the first chair. Regarding Les Dissonances, Grimal has stated</span></span><span style="background-color: #444444; color: #fce5cd; font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 16px;">:</span><span style="color: #fce5cd;"><span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">“We work together in the sense of community of
mind, a gathering of very strong positive energy and joy.” Regarding the violin itself, he has said:
“What interests me is the invisible - that something which makes the dancer
take flight and causes his gesture to be eternal.”<span style="background-color: #444444;"> </span></span></span><span style="background: rgb(68 , 68 , 68); font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #fce5cd;"> The
Dissonances musicians are from different parts of France and Europe – from various
other ensembles – almost none are permanent members. The orchestra plays in many different cities
and venues. Understandably, Grimal frequently
plays the violin concerto repertoire with this orchestra. When he does, he never actually conducts, as
all other conductor/violinists do - he just lets the orchestra play by itself
(and it is fully capable of doing so.) His
style of playing, although virtuosic and brilliant, is relaxed, unassuming, and
unpretentious. His repertoire includes
the Schumann concerto, which is now gaining in popularity. Grimal began lessons at age five but I do not
know the name of his first teacher.
First teachers are usually not famous pedagogues or even famous
violinists – sometimes they are immediate family members. At the Paris Conservatory Grimal won first
prizes in violin and chamber music at age 20 (1993.) He later studied with the enigmatic Philippe
Hirschhorn, most likely in the Netherlands, where Hirschhorn was then teaching. He also briefly studied with other violinists
after he graduated. In 1996, he received
the European Culture Prize. He was 23
years old. Needless to say, he has
played in most of the world’s great halls with high-profile conductors and
orchestras. However, other than live
recordings, his discography (on various labels) is not extensive. Nonetheless, the few studio (commercial) recordings
he has done have received national and international awards and
recognition. A great many composers have
written works for him. In 2004 Grimal
founded Les Dissonances. In 2008, he
became artist in residence at the Dijon Opera.
(Dijon is about 200 miles southeast of Paris and is the birthplace of
Rameau.) Grimal has taught at the
Advanced School of Music in Saarbrucken (Germany) for some time although I
don’t know how long he has been there.
(Saarbrucken is about 180 miles north of Dijon and 200 miles east of
Paris. It is very close to the French
border with Germany.) Additionally, he
plays at many music festivals around Europe and has frequently held
masterclasses wherever he performs. His
violin is the Roederer Stradivarius from 1710, previously owned by Turkish
violinist Ayla Erduran. He also plays a
modern violin made for him by French luthier Jacques Fustier. You can listen to the finale from Brahms’
Third Symphony<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GkplUAQd4M" target="_blank"> here</a>. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgH9qQsHLOc" target="_blank">Here</a> is Grimal
playing Mozart’s fifth concerto – first movement. </span></span></div>

a Russian violinist and teacher born (in Kiev) on October 16, 1931. He is known for having won the very first
International Tchaikovsky Violin Competition (in March, 1958), the best known violin
competition in the world. He was 26
years old. That was the same competition
at which Van Cliburn (the American piano player) won first prize in the piano
division, subsequently becoming popular and famous. That year, Russian composer Dmitri
Shostakovich was the chairman. Klimov’s
first teacher was his father. He later
studied at the Odessa Conservatory and later still at the Moscow Conservatory
with David Oistrakh. As far as I was
able to determine, Klimov did not perform outside Russia until 1967. Quite possibly his first concert outside the
Soviet Union was in London, England. Although
he has toured around the world, his career has mostly been spent in
Russia. He has been teaching at the
Moscow Conservatory for a long time and has received many official awards. Among his many pupils are Elena Denisova,
Hisaya Sato, Alice Waten, Fiona Ziegler, Evgeny Grach, Rachel Schmidt, and
Alena Tsoi. Here is a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mfk8rqJc3J0" target="_blank">YouTube</a> video with

<span style="color: #fff2cc;"><span face=""calibri" , "sans-serif"" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Marianna Vasileva (Marianna Vasilyeva, Marianna
Wasiljewa) Is a Russian violinist and teacher born (in St Petersburg) on
November 25, 1986. In addition to a
fantastic technique and a very expressive style of playing, she is known for
performing all 24 Caprices by Paganini in a single recital – currently,
probably the only female violinist to do so.
As far as I know, she has not recorded the famous Caprices but probably
will in the near future. (The first
female to record all 24 Caprices is Bulgarian violinist Vanya Milanova, back in
1985.)** (See comment below.) Vasileva began her violin studies
at age five with her father, a professional violinist. She has stated that even at that tender age
she practiced several hours a day. Her
first accompanist was her mother, a professional pianist, with whom she has
performed in recital many times. At age
7, she began her studies at the St Petersburg Conservatory’s School for Gifted
Children with an obscure teacher named Vladimir Ovcharek. At age 11, she began studying with Dora
Schwarzberg at the Advanced School for Music in Vienna. At age 17 she began studying with Zakhar Bron
at the Advanced School for Music and Dance in Cologne. During all those years, she was also
(simultaneously) studying at the St Petersburg Conservatory. (The St Petersburg Conservatory is where the
famous Leopold Auer taught for many years.)
Her performing career actually began at age 8, when she played in public
for the first time. At age 10, she made
her formal debut in Russia and Germany playing the first concerto (the one in g
minor) by Max Bruch. In that year, she
also won her first violin competition in Russia. In 2001, she actually won a violin in the
International Spohr Violin Competition – I don’t know what violin it was but
I’m certain it was a high quality instrument.
She was 15 years old. In 2009,
she won first prize in the International Competition for Young Violinists in
honor of Karol Lipinski and Henryk Wieniawski in Lublin, Poland (not to be
confused with the well-known Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition held in
Poznan, Poland, every five years.) She
was 23 years old. In 2010 she won first
prize in the Prague Spring International Music Competition. She currently teaches at the Music Academy in
Madrid, in addition to teaching masterclasses around the world, as so many
other soloists do. </span><span face=""calibri" , "sans-serif"" style="font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">Her
concert tours span the entire world and she has played in almost all of the
important musical venues and concert halls. Her repertoire is very extensive although her discography is still quite small. </span><span face=""calibri" , "sans-serif"" style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">I
know Vasileva has played a Guarneri Del Gesu violin from 1724 and a 1752 Carlo
Antonio Testore violin on many concerts but I don’t know if those are her
current instruments – I will try to find out and post it as a comment below. Vasileva is fluent in four languages;
Russian, English, German, and Hebrew. Here
is a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvJEJr9PwVY" target="_blank">YouTube video</a> where she plays a well-known piece by Tchaikovsky. Here is a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUdUduyPUp8" target="_blank">sound file</a> where she plays the
seldom-heard Ysaye sonata for two violins – the other violinist is Dmitri
Kogan, grandson of the great Leonid Kogan. </span></span></div>

<span style="color: #fce5cd; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Antal Zalai (Antal Szalai) is a Hungarian
violinist, composer, and teacher born (in Budapest) on January 31, 1981. He is known for what has been described as a
perfect technique and refined artistry.
He is a former child prodigy who was offered his first recording contract
while still a teenager and his musical education is very broad. Zalai began his violin studies with his
father and mother at age 5. From age 7
to age 14 he studied, in Budapest, with Laszlo Denes. His other teachers in Budapest were Josef
Kopelman and Peter Komlos. In fact, it
has been said that he acquired his 1733 Stradivarius violin from Professor
Komlos. That violin had been owned by
another Hungarian violinist, Gyorgy Garay, who is now almost completely
forgotten. Zalai graduated from the
Royal Conservatory in Brussels in 2009.
He was 28 years old. However,
Zalai had been concertizing since age 12.
Along the way, he had participated in masterclasses given by Erick
Friedman, Pinchas Zukerman, Tibor Varga, Lewis Kaplan, Isaac Stern, Gyorgy Pauk,
and an assortment of other concert violinists.
He made his British debut in Liverpool in 2008. That same year he made his debut in
Berlin. The venues he has played in
include Carnegie Hall (New York), the Musikverein (Vienna), the Philharmonie
(Berlin), and the Moscow Conservatory.
Zalai has toured almost the entire globe and played with some of the
most famous names in the conducting world.
He also frequently conducts masterclasses wherever he performs. As are so many violinists, he is a chess
player. The cadenzas he plays are very
frequently his own. Here is a YouTube
video where he teams up with Russian violinist <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ho9pGj3Fiog" target="_blank">Marianna Vasileva</a> to play the
violin duos by Shostakovich – Zalai plays the second violin part. These duos are written in a style which we
do not associate with the famous Russian composer. The (intense and emotional) performance is
easily the best on YouTube. This <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9CVbsnXSZ0" target="_blank">othervideo</a> is also quite unique and interesting. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="color: #fff2cc;">Kristof Barati is a Hungarian violinist and
teacher born (in Budapest) on May 17, 1979.
Although born in Hungary, he and his family spent a few years in
Venezuela (for reasons unknown) and he even began violin lessons there with his
mother at age 5. By age 8 he was giving
concerts with orchestras in Venezuela. I
don’t know at what point the family moved from Venezuela to Europe but several
sources state he performed in France at age 11.
Sometime after or before this, he relocated to Hungary to study at the
well-known Franz Liszt Academy. Exactly
what year that was is unknown to me. His
teachers at the academy were Miklos Szenthelyi and Vilmos Tatrai. By 1995, at age 16, he began entering violin
competitions at which he was very successful, placing either first, second, or
third at all of them. In 1996, he began
studying privately with a little-known professor of violin, Eduard Wulfson, in
Paris. Music critics frequently praise
his musicianship (artistry) in addition to his phenomenal technical
prowess. In addition to his world-wide
concertizing, he also takes part in important music festivals in Italy, France,
Switzerland, and elsewhere as a chamber music player. Barati’s discography is not yet extensive,
but his recordings of the first and second Paganini concertos are among the
best. His recording of the Mozart
concertos (all five) has also been very highly praised. Although he has played other very fine and
valuable violins, for about 14 years (from 2003), he played (and recorded with)
the Lady Harmsworth Stradivarius violin constructed in 1703. I don’t know if he is currently using that
instrument. He is known for being a very
strong chess player and avid photographer.
Barati has taught at the Sorbonne in Paris and at other venues as a
masterclass professor. Although he has
not (as far as I know) performed all 24 Paganini Caprices at a single recital,
he has performed all six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by Bach in one
(very lengthy) recital (in France, then again in Russia.) Here is a link to the entire recording of the
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmhtc-VWLek" target="_blank">Mozart</a> concertos, courtesy of Brilliant Classics recordings. Here is a YouTube video of a movement from

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: #444444;"><span style="color: #fce5cd;"><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Alexander Markov is a Russian (some would say
American) violinist, composer, and teacher born (in Moscow) on January 24,
1963. Although his repertoire is very
extensive, he is best known for his performances (in concert, on CD, and DVD)
of the 24 Paganini Caprices. One YouTube
video of his performance of the last Caprice has over 6 million views. In fact, Markov’s playing of the pizzicato
section of this Caprice sometimes leaves the audience so spellbound they
interrupt the performance with rapturous, spontaneous applause – as the New
York Times music critic recently explained it: “…</span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">the dazzling
left-hand pizzicato variation drew a vigorous ovation midway through the work.</span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">” Markov also plays a six-string electric
violin in a rock band which he co-founded.
He co-wrote a unique rock concerto for his own use which he has had
great success with. I don’t think a
commercial recording of this concerto is yet available. Markov’s violin studies began at age 5. His father (concert violinist Albert Markov)
was his first (and most influential) teacher. However, Markov was also enrolled at the famous Central Music School for gifted children, which is part of the Moscow (Tchaikovsky) Conservatory. There, he studied with the well-known violin pedagogue Felix Andrievsky. (Andrievsky is now teaching at the Royal College of Music in London.) By age 8 he had already appeared in public. His family emigrated to the U. S. when he was
12. They arrived in Vienna on September 11, 1975 and spent three months there before heading for the United States. He continued studying with his
father for many years. At age 16, he
made his Carnegie Hall debut in New York.
(Two sources state that he made his Carnegie Hall debut on October 9,
1983, at age 20. He himself has said he
made his debut at age 16. The first was his debut with orchestra; the second was as soloist, in recital.) At
age 18, he began studying with Juilliard teacher Ivan Galamian. Galamian died a few months afterward. (Emanuel Vardi used to tell a joke that he
killed Leopold Auer because Auer died a few months after Vardi began taking
lessons with him.) At age 19 (1982)
Markov won second prize (most sources say the Gold Medal) at the famous
Paganini Competition (Genoa, Italy) and five years later he received the Avery
Fisher Career Grant. As a result of his Paganini
Competition award, he was granted the use of Paganini’s own 1743 Cannone
Guarnerius for a recital performance. (Other
violinists who have played this famous violin are Leonid Kogan, Schlomo Mintz,
Eugene Fodor, Salvatore Accardo, Maxim Vengerov, Gerard Poulet, Regina Carter, Anna Tifu, Dmitri
Berlinsky, and Ruggiero Ricci.) Markov’s
concertizing has taken him to all corners of the world and to most of the
world’s great concert halls and orchestras with top conductors on the podium. As do most concert violinists, he also
participates in music festivals far and wide.
He also frequently gives masterclasses all around the world. He has recorded for the Erato and Warner
Classics labels. His recordings are easy
to find on the internet. Although he
used to play a Guarnerius Del Gesu violin, Markov has been playing a 1970
Sergio Peresson violin for some time. He
recorded the 24 caprices on that violin.
I have heard it up close - it is indistinguishable from any Strad or
Guarneri violin. Here is a YouTube video
of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKs_d8sgvI4" target="_blank">Paganini</a> Caprice number 5 with Markov using the original bowings. The photo is courtesy of the Alexander Markov <a href="http://www.alexandermarkov.com/" target="_blank">website</a>. </span></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #fff2cc; font-family: "times new roman" , "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Johann Peter Salomon was a German violinist,
composer, arranger, conductor, teacher, and concert impresario, born (in Bonn)
on or about February 20, 1745 – he was christened (baptized) on February 20 so
it’s a sure thing he was born a few days before that. Salomon spent more than half of his career in
England. To say that he was a well-rounded
musician is quite an understatement; nevertheless, nowadays, he is remembered for two
things: (1) he was born in the same house as Ludwig Van Beethoven and (2) he
persuaded Joseph Haydn to visit London - twice.
It has been said that he had a unique style of playing, especially in
chamber music with his string quartet. He
must have had more than one teacher but I only know of one: Franz Benda, a
member of the Benda musical dynasty. By
age 13, he was playing violin in the court orchestra, presumably in Bonn since
that was where his benefactor (Clement August, a lover of the arts) presided. Salomon also made a brief concert tour as a
soloist (begun in August, 1765) which took him to Frankfurt and Berlin. By age 20, he was concertmaster of the
orchestra in the court of Prince Heinrich of Prussia (Germany), a brother of
Frederick the Great, presumably in Rheinsberg, a town which is about 40 miles
north of Berlin. (An interesting thing
about Prince Heinrich is that he almost became King of the United States.) While working for Prince Heinrich (a period
which lasted about 15 years), Salomon composed many works, among which were a
number of operas, all of them now forgotten.
Sometime in 1780, after his patron had suddenly disbanded his orchestra,
Salomon visited Paris and from there decided to travel to London. He was 35 years old. There, he gave his first concert at Covent
Garden, as conductor and violinist, on March 23, 1781. From that day forward, Salomon was very
active in English musical life, giving concerts as leader (concertmaster),
violin soloist, conductor, composer, organizer, and quartet player. How he became fluent in the English language
is unknown to me although it has been reported that he was actually fluent in
four languages. He also found time to
teach privately. As far as the famous
Haydn visits to England, I was able to ascertain, from various sources,
everything that follows. After Joseph
Haydn had become internationally popular from the dissemination of much of his
music, several persons in England had tried to persuade him, since the early 1780s,
to visit and to present concerts there.
These efforts were all unsuccessful because Haydn was still under
contract to one of the Esterhazy Princes (for whom he ultimately worked thirty
years) and was very loyal to him. Regarding
a visit or tour, Salomon had also corresponded with Haydn for a while and had
even sent a personal emissary but that trip had not been totally successful. So Haydn remained out of reach. As luck and coincidence always play a part in
everybody’s life, so it was with Salomon.
After a particular trip that he made to Italy (to secure the services of
several opera singers for a London event) – being the well-known and energetic
impresario that he was – Salomon stopped in Cologne on his way back to
London. While there, he read in the
newspapers that the good Prince Nikolaus from Esterhazy (Haydn’s employer) had
died (in Vienna, on September 28, 1790.)
Salomon immediately seized the opportunity to seek Haydn out and ask him
(again) to come to London. This time,
Haydn agreed. After signing an agreement
and figuring out the logistics, they left Vienna on December 15, 1790. It was a Wednesday. On their way to England, they stopped by Bonn
to pay their respects to Beethoven, which they did on December 26, 1790. (A year later, Mozart would be dead.) Beethoven was not yet famous - he was barely 20 years old. Salomon had known Beethoven much earlier (in
their Bonn days) and by this time he had also programmed some of his works for
his London concerts. They were good
friends. Haydn had never met
Beethoven. In any case, Haydn and
Salomon crossed the English Channel (from a point in Calais, France) on or
about January 1, 1791 (a Saturday) and shortly thereafter arrived in
London. Salomon was 45 years old. The rest is history. Haydn went on to write 12 symphonies for
Salomon’s concerts in London and other works as well. Salomon would soon be at work arranging most
of these symphonies for small chamber ensembles. One such work is the symphony number 104
which Salomon arranged for string quartet, flute, and double bass. It may be that these arrangements were not
artistic endeavors but a purely commercial venture on Salomon’s part. Salomon’s arrangements were available to the
public before any orchestral parts were even printed. (In his contract with Salomon, Haydn had
given up all rights to those works he composed in London for Salomon’s
concerts. However, Haydn was paid very
handsomely for his efforts.) In March of
1813, Salomon and a few other English musicians and patrons of the arts founded
what was called the Philharmonic Society, which still exists today. It was a de facto sponsor and/or administrator
of a professional symphony orchestra and choral society which established
concerts which were regularly presented to and for the general public and not
associated solely with the aristocracy.
The orchestra did not have a name but it could very well have had a name
if they had thought of one. Salomon
conducted its first concert in March of 1813.
He was 68 years old. As far as I
know, Salomon was active as a violinist, composer, teacher, impresario, arranger,
and conductor until the day he died. As
a composer, his most famous work is probably the opera titled Windsor Castle,
written in 1795. All of his other
compositions (including his many arrangements) have been neglected and
forgotten. It has been said that Salomon
played a Stradivarius violin which Corelli had played before him but I could
not substantiate that from more than one source. It has also been said that Salomon gave the
Jupiter nickname to Mozart’s last symphony, number 41. Perhaps it is true. Salomon’s most famous pupils are Franz Anton
Ries (Beethoven’s violin teacher and father of pianist Ferdinand Ries) and
George Pinto, English violinist, pianist, and composer. Salomon died on November 28, 1815, after a
brief illness brought on by an accident.
He was 70 years old. Here is a Vimeo file of Salomon’s <a href="https://vimeo.com/246846829" target="_blank">Romance in D</a> for violin, played by English violinist,
Simon Standage. The photo is courtesy of
